Frederick Mathias Alexander

1869-1955 Tasmania

Alexander was an orator/actor in New Zealand in the 19th century.  He kept losing his voice and was unable to work.  It took him many years to overcome his weakness.  The medical profession were interested in the brilliance of his work and his fame spread.  He was originally known as the Breathing Man.

He overcame his bad habit of depressing his larynx by tightening his back neck. He became very skilled at working with his students with a “hands-on” technique, helping them to overcome their own bad habits.  Guiding them to use their bodies in a new way which reduced tension and created greater ease.
