Primary Control

The body is designed to function automatically but over time we develop bad postural habits and mis-use sets in. Harmful tensions and tightness set into movement patterns and the natural co-ordination of the body is lost. This can result in pain and discomfort. The restoration of Primary Control sets the body on a path to recovery. However, the benefits are far greater, resulting in greater calmness and a very deep awareness of the mind/body connection. Primary Control engages the Whole Body in action with the least amount of tension. We make movement easier.
How does this work?
How does the Alexander Technique do all of this? By a system called “Primary Control”. Frederick Mathias Alexander discovered that when the “head, neck and back” are balanced and lengthened – the reflexes of the body, in movement, will automatically bring about lengthened “muscle tone” and internal support. This underpins natural, pain free movement. In a lesson the teacher will guide the student to a new understanding and awareness of mis-use and by using new directions the student will learn to access their own Primary Control and their own better ‘Use of Self’.
